Learn to Manage Your Budget

Most of us oftentimes get troubled about their monthly budget, not managing your monthly budget can can put you in to further in debt if you are not cautious. The benefits that come from handling your budget the right way not only saves you money but help ease some of your tension over debt. Always keep in mind that a budget is primarily a program for your monthly spending. Your budget, like any plan, needs some level of management to get a successful outcome. The manner I manage my budget, for instance, is by focussing on keeping info organized and controlling my expenditure.

My first focus is on coordinating the information in my budget. I keep track of recurring expenses like utilities, car and loan payments, insurance, and the like, for example. I can very easily lose track of my spending without organising my budget. By knowing what expenses repeat every month, I have an imminent grasp on the minimum amount of money I have to set away each month before I spend on other things I can moderate a little more such as entertainment, apparel, and holidays.

To make a financial advancement, I make sure that I moderate my spending in my budget. A great measure of advancement is putting money into a savings instrument or paying down debt. However, if I over spend, the opposite is true because instead of saving money I will use debt to help me cover the monthly expenses in my budget. Distinctly, giving in to the stresses of budgeting can have costly outcomes for my finances, particularly if I am not capable to pay down my debt.

There are two benefits for moderating and organizing my budget: First, I save money by avoiding redundant expenditure. Second, my finances are directed at reaching financial goals. Basically, by not buying things I do not need, I am actually freeing up money that I can either use for something else or save. The spare money can also be useful in paying off debt or saving it for a vacation. In addition to having extra money, it will also allow me to yield longer term financial goals like saving and investing for retirement or paying off my mortgage or student loans. With mybudget being organised and controlled, not only does my financial situation become more stable but successfully managing my budget reduces the stress that often comes with being in debt.

My Journey to Regaining Confidence

My hair loss treatment journey commenced the day I started to notice my receding hair line and my bald spot getting bigger. The most apparent thing to do was to find ways to style my hair to conceal my bald spot. I got down to wear more and more hats on the weekends as I went out with my wife, acquaintances or family. Walking in to work every morning without my hat was a tough experience. Your thoughts changes when you are going through hair loss. It is so true that you never know what you have until you lose it. That can be accurate about your hair loss.

As I looked in the mirror I began to appreciate every one of the hair strands I had left. It was as if with each individual hair I lost, so was a small percent of my self-confidence gone as well. I was not alone, a mate of mine had been suffering from the same problem as me. Yet recently he appeared so much more relaxed and I observed that it was as if his hair was growing back. I didn’t wanted to bring it up but after a while I decided to ask. It was then that he told me about Advanced Hair Studios. My friend Josh told me that he had only had a few treatments and has already started to see some positive results, he not only regrown his hair, but his confidence as well. After speaking to Josh and understanding what Advanced Hair has done for him, I took the courage to make an appointment for a free consultation.

At first, I was a little sceptical. But effects were apparent within a few weeks. Not only on my scalp, but in my attitude. I began to lose the hats on the weekends and I quickly began to feel better about myself. My wife who has been complaining about my lack of interest in our relationship began to notice the change in that department as well. It is amazing how just a few trips to the Advanced Hair Studio had begun to change my life as a whole. I have constantly been worried about people discovering my bald spot. Now, I am not terrified to look people in the eyes again as I have my full set of self esteem back.

Advance Hair Studio has not only given me back my hair, but a big chunk of my confidence as well. If you are suffering from hair loss I highly recommend them as it has done so much for me in just a few months of treatments. Don’t let your confidence continue to be lost with your hair.

It’s Wig Time: Mutual Understanding for My Friend’s Lost Hair

Not many never imagined the incredible Caroline Upton, my life-long soul mate, might someday need a collection of wigs. Her terrific long black hair flowed in sync with impeccable style. Have you seen her lately? There’s no question she will always be the center of attention for her attitude. Not many in town can tell she lives confidently wearing well-crafted African American wigs. Guess it’s no secret anymore.

When we were mere children in Arizona, we regularly stole the spotlights to every dance. A few years went by before her women’s hair loss took its toll and she became nearly bald. I hinted about these lace wigs. Whatever, it didn’t matter much. The incredible woman fearlessly fully owned her innate beauty.

Appearing at her fiance’s roller hockey tournament, we taunted the players until a numbskull accidentally flung the ball (or however you say it) into the bleachers. She jumped up for it when her hand-knitted “head sweater” (her idea) landed in a beer, uncovering her naked head. Like nothing happened, she tossed the ball to the game official. What’d I tell ya about her spunk?

That said, who can be invincible at all times? One time at our semi-monhtly stroll to the art gallery, where she very sincerely told me that she opts to do without hair as a statement. She could never spend money on women’s medical wigs, secretly acknowledging she wanted her hair back. She then our fearless protagonist turned flush red and requested that I should think nothing more of it. So I did.

I couldn’t drop it. Shortly after, I IM’d with her about settling the wig issue. Eventually we both came to the obvious conclusion: we were going wig shopping! We have a knack for making online wig shopping fun.

She and I were bewildered by the wide selection of hair colors, textures and styles. We couldn’t believe that human hair wigs are so professionally crafted for people, even superstars. These lace front wigs were exactly what she needed. I arranged a delightfully contemporary ensemble to match our wigs. Its become an inside joke, if you haven’t heard. The other day she gave me a photo of us in our wigs and thanked me for her dignified synthetic wig, and confessed it rekindles new vibrance that she’d forgotten. It’s heartwarming to realize my best friend rediscover the sassy, feminine girl I remember. I’m right there with her.

Zap That Clutter! Increase Your Creativity

Clutter, clutter everywhere!

More and more I’m hearing Baby Boomers complain about the clutter in their lives. And, I have to admit, I’m no exception. Plus, a significant number of clients are telling me they are overwhelmed by clutter and can’t seem to get to the things that really matter.

When we redid the office recently, just that one room showed how much “stuff” we’d accumulated and then let sit over the years. I’m proud to say that not everything went back into the office. Instead, the library received a large donation of books, charities received useable items, some antique books are on consignment, and the rest was trashed.

I’ve also been unloading a storage locker for which I’ve been paying good money to store a lot of useless, worthless stuff. As of this writing, every box of junk has been purged and countless bags of garbage have been hauled away each week for the past several months. There’s more reviewing, sorting and pitching left to do, but already it’s a great weight off my shoulders.

The sad thing about this story is that so many other people are facing the same glut of stuff in their homes and lives. In fact, the problem is so prevalent that I’ve come to believe that the Baby Boomers may be the most cluttered generation in history.

So, how did we amass so much clutter?
And, how much of our creative energy – not to mention our money — is being drained, because our stuff has taken charge of our lives?
Just how much is the clutter in your life interfering with your creativity?

As I think back over the past 50+ years, I remember times that were far less pressured and far less affluent. Overwhelm in the 1950s was a very different thing than it is today. But as each decade went by, it seemed that affluence increased and the pace of life became so incredibly fast that it became easier and easier to dump “stuff” in boxes to be dealt with “later”. Only “later” never came, and the stuff – now known as clutter – just kept piling up and costing me more and more – time, money, energy, self-respect, to name a few.

Then there’s the issue of families growing smaller. Whereas great-grandma and great-grandpa had four or five or more children to whom to distribute their earthly goods during their old age, today there may be only one or two, sometimes three, kids who inherit not just from mom and pop, but from all sorts of other relatives. In my case, I’ve been “blessed” by my parents, two aunts, my mother’s cousins and a few others with everything from furniture to china to oodles of pictures and papers including baptism certificates, letters exchanged during World War II, home mortgages and military discharge papers! And, of course, all have tremendous sentimental value that has made it very difficult to part with such treasures. I mean, how could I part with something all those good people touched and used and shared with me?!

So, I’ve hung on to this stuff, even though managing it has been a costly nightmare. After all, I’ve been holding it all in trust for the next generation. Let them take care of it! But, guess what. This new generation does not value these things that connect one generation to the next. They want simplicity. I guess you can’t blame them. After all, they’ve been living with us and seeing how all this stuff has taken charge of our lives!

It’s taken a few years and a lot of reflection, but I’ve decided to take this noose off from around my neck. I’ve decided that it’s much better to let go of many of the family treasures, and let others who will use them add them to their lives. When they gather dust in a closet or a storage locker, what’s the point of keeping them? I will keep some things, of course. But I don’t need to hang on to everything everyone has willed to me.
And, all those old papers – magazines, catalogs, school papers, kid’s stuff, etc. etc. – which I haven’t looked at in years, they’re gone forever.

My husband and I have been fussing about this issue for the last 20 years. Now, I’m not sure what we will talk about for the next 20 years! However, I can tell you I’m looking forward to fresh topics and new adventures. I’ve spent way too much energy thinking about, arguing about, shuffling around and spending money on useless stuff that’s been controlling my life.

The end result, which I’m just beginning to enjoy, is that I now have much more room in my life for creativity and innovation.

And, you know, it feels fantastic to be back in charge.

The Power To Decide

“Most people are about as happy as they make their minds up to be.”
Abraham Lincoln

Each day I decide to love my family, friends, colleagues, and myself.

I have come to appreciate that whenever I am in an upset, I can decide to love the people involved despite the circumstances.

In my relationship, I can decide to love and stay connected with my mate regardless of what has occurred. This catapults me back to my center, where I experience my own dignity and power and my attention goes to what needs to be done. I discover that somewhere, somehow, both in my inner and outer worlds, I have what it takes and I am again able to enjoy my day.

All of this is generated from deciding.

This approach has evolved from deciding the following:

I have decided that I am sufficient.
I have decided that I am enough.
I have decided that I have what it takes and the world around me has what it takes.
I have now, have had in the past, and will always have, enough.
I have decided that change is ok.

To begin something or to bring anything to a definitive end, we decide.

Ending uncertainty is a decision.

Selecting a course of action is a decision.

Resolving a dispute is a decision.

Making choices or judgments are decisions too.

Deciding establishes consent.

We make decisions each day, almost as often as we breathe, yet many of us are taking action (both positive and negative) without first acknowledging that we are responsible for deciding to do so.

Characterthe willingness to accept responsibility for one’s lifeis the source from which self-respect springs. Joan Didion

Taking a moment to acknowledge our decision establishes intent, and therefore, acknowledges responsibility.

To generate the experience of being directly responsible for the actions you take, consciously acknowledge your decision to act prior to taking the action.

Examples:
“I have decided to eat this breakfast”
“I have decided to walk across the room”
“I have decided to accept this acknowledgment”
“I have decided to see this with humor”
“I have decided to stop diminishing myself”
“I have decided to trust myself”
“I have decided to make this communication”
“I have decided to experience this in this way”

You will be amazed at how your life will come into focus and how much clarity and energy you will experience.

Deciding constitutes volition, without which ideas remain in the unseen world and do not become activated to take hold in the physical universe.

Without deciding, there would be no resolve. Resolve implies an expressed or clear decision or determination to do or refrain from doing something. Example: He resolved to quit smoking.

Attention is a creative energy.

Deciding is significant because it aligns with commitment to eradicate hesitancy, fluctuating, vacillating, or wavering.

Just as having a commitment is distinct from actually being committed. Having an intention is distinct from intending. The absence of determination, resolve, and volition reconciles intention as a noun, a non-action.

Intent is the state of mind in which an act is done.

To deal with my many negative habits, consciously deciding to no longer be that way, act that way, think that way etc., has been my most powerful ally.

Decide to love.

To love is a decision. Many people think that love is a feeling. This notion has caused people to believe they have stopped loving. Many a broken heart in mate relationships, lovers, friendships and families, have been caused by the notion that love can begin or end.

Decide to trust.

Trust is a decision. Many people think trust is a feeling. When another does not deliver on their promises or when we do not keep the promises we make with others or ourselves, the experience of trust diminishes. Yet ultimately, the decision to trust or not trust is up to each individual.

Happiness is a decision I must make. A Course in Miracles

Decide to be happy.

Most folks think that happiness relies on circumstances. Nonetheless, happiness itself is ever present. We decide to experience it or not. Even in the depths of my grief I have experienced moments of happiness and contentment in knowing that I am capable of loving profoundly.

Each of us is responsible for loving, trusting and being happy in our lives. Basing the decision to love or not to love, to trust or not to trust, to be happy or not, on previously determined sets of circumstances, agreements or experiences, might seem to shift the responsibility to something other than ourselves, but ultimately each one of us is responsible for the decision. Circumstances, agreements, experiences and beliefs do not have choice. We do.

For me to experience the freedom in being in integrity to the best of my ability, each day I consciously decide to tell the truth, go for results, maintain my freedom of choice, and manage my agreements.

Decide to trust. Decide to be happy. Decide you are sufficient. Decide to be curious and delighted and radiant and generous and fully alive.

But most of all, decide to love. Again and again and again, the decision to love will lead you home.

This is your life. Don’t miss it!

Ways to Deal with Interview Questions

One strategy that lends itself to interview for technical posts is the demonstrate to and tell tactic. In this article we will go through how you could use this specific strategy in your own job interview

The foundation of this technique lies in the finding that interview boards are more moved by candidate showing them what they have done – which thereby shows the ownership and use of the essential and desirable skills – than by simply telling the job interview panel that “I am a good team player” and “I am have good communcation skills”, etc

Should the opportunity arise, you should be prepared to present to the job interview panel an example of your work to back up the thought that you possess the skill set necessary to excel at the job. In order to do this you need to be able to

1. Get them to ask You for Your Work

2. Show Off Your Work

To set up the play, try to raise the opportunity by using one of the following language patterns:

  • If you’re interested I could demonstrate to you…
  • If you wanted to know more, I have the (report) with me right here…
  • If it would be appropriate, you could have a look at…
  • I have a written precis of the project here, if you wanted to see it…
  • If it would help…

You also need to be able to display your work at the interview. In order to do this, pick out one or two projects that you could use for this strategy. Choose the projects that

  • have work already in a written or electronic form
  • that display the most appropriate skill set for the post that you are applying for
  • with a high probablity of usage for your job interview

Anticipate which questions could fall out from the interview panel, after they have scan your report for the first time and with no real warning. You could ask a friend or colleague to quickly peruse your project work and let you know what questions naturally follow from their minds.

You may also want to look at leaving a copy of this work with them to review at their leisure. Ensure that it is well presented and looks professional. It will help them remember you when they are going through their post interview discussion of the several candidates

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Although it’s true that most successful people spend more time working to achieve their goals than others, there are many people who work hard, but don’t accomplish the success they want. How come? What’s the big difference? Why would one hard worker succeed and another hard worker fail to accomplish their goal?

An even better question is how can someone who doesn’t work hard succeed? Is that possible? Can you work smarter, not harder and still enjoy the rewards of success?

I say “yes.” And here’s how.

People who succeed generally like, or even love, their work. Often they put more hours into accomplishing results and it doesn’t even feel like work. It feels like they’re doing what they really want to be doing. It feels like play.

So you begin being smarter by choosing “work” you enjoy. Choose something that gives you lots of satisfaction in return for your actions. Being happy doing what you’re doing makes you more productive.

The next smart move is to base your time management on priorities. The better you get at choosing your priorities on a yearly, weekly, daily basis, the smarter you will be and the faster you can produce results.

We all know people who constantly spin their wheels. They work hard and they’re very very busy, but they never seem to get anywhere. Sometimes these people even like their work, but they somehow just don’t seem to get much pay-off for all the effort they put into it. This problem is caused by poor time management and the lack of setting valid priorities.

How do you improve your ability to set good priorities? It takes practice. And, first of all, you must have clear goals and your goals must be prioritized. You do this by listing your goals in order of what’s most important to you. This is a constant process, because your priorities can change.

Once you have prioritized your goals, you must choose the actions you’re going to take to reach those goals. So the second step is to make a list of things to do. You’ll need to do this every week, every day and whenever you’re feeling confused about what to do next.

Step number three is to prioritize your actions. When you do this, keep the 80/20 rule in mind. The 80/20 rule shows you how, out of a list of ten actions, only approximately 20% (two out of ten) will be of major importance to accomplishing your goal. 80%, or eight of the ten things on your list, will only give you 20% of the value, whereas just 20%, or two things out of the list of ten, will provide a whopping 80% of the value.

Choosing priorities is essential to working smarter. Often your top priority actions will be the most confronting. So, if you neglect to prioritize your list, your tendency will be to avoid the most important actions you need to take in order to reach your goal. You naturally avoid these because they’re the most difficult. But that’s not smart. Avoiding your priority activities causes you to have to work harder and longer to achieve the results.

Like I said, choosing good priorities takes practice. So you’ll want to follow these three steps on a daily basis. Each time you do it, you’ll get better and better at the art of setting priorities. And setting good, clear priorities is the best way for you to become more successful faster. It’s the way to work smarter, not harder.

Simple Pleasures: Ingredients to Feed Your Spirit.

“When we do something we love, again and again, our life comes to hold the fragrance of that thing. ~ Wayne Mullen

Cold air slips through the cracks in my doorway and around my windows. My cats lie curled up in balls; asleep on plump pillows. They hibernate most days now and only awaken from their dreamy slumbers for bites of kibble. They are unaware of our troops in the Middle East or our economy problems here at home.

What sustains you during tough times? Do you have a network of support? What are the things that comfort you when life seems to be filling your plate with more of the things you find unappetizing? Now is the perfect time to focus on simple daily rituals and pleasures as we live through more turbulent days ahead. Let’s call these, recipes for rapture.

Every good recipe must include the right ingredients. Perhaps, it’s buying flowers each week to put in your home or, on your desk at work. Most grocery stores have flowers available and you can include these weekly flowers as part of the menu for “feeding” your spirit. Maybe, it’s taking a break from watching the news or reading the newspaper. Instead, listen to some music that you find particularly soothing. Try keeping a dream journal to capture your dreams or create a personal altar in the corner of a room. You can mix and match ‘ingredients’ according to your particular taste. The key is to create a recipe that is authentically soul-satisfying to you. For me, its cups of tea, a daily walk, and watching birds at my window feeder.

Or, be like cats. Take long naps. Choose the most comfortable and warmest of spots; preferably in sunshine and curled up next to someone. Stretch daily and, when it’s warm enough, go outside for a little fresh air. Watch birds for entertainment. Play everyday. Make sure you have lots of toys available. Get a good cat scratch especially along the back.

To create a ‘purrrrfect’ life fill yours with plenty of simple pleasures and daily rituals that bring you comfort and joy.

Empowering Vision

Playing Our Part:

Sir Michael Costa was conducting a rehearsal, in which the orchestra was joined in a great chorus. About half way through the session, with the trumpets blaring, drums rolling, and violins singing their rich melody, the Piccolo player muttered to himself, “What good am I doing? I might as well not be playing. Nobody can hear me anyway!” So he placed his instrument to his lips but made no sound. Within moments the conductor cried, “Stop! Stop! Stop! Where is the Piccolo?” Although it’s sometimes hard to see, it’s true that often the smallest and seemingly least important instrument can make the greatest contribution. So it is with our life.

I have worked for the past twenty years advising and assisting people to find their personal and corporate vision. My instrument is the capacity to support others in the journey of discovering vision; vision in life and vision in business!
As a coach, we have an awesome privilege and are in a unique position to play our part. For all of us, our performance isn’t complete until we do our best with what we have. This requires vision!

Defining Vision:

“An informed bridge from the present to the future”
“Seeing the invisible and making it visible”
“Sanctified dreams” -Gerge Barna
“Vision for purpose is a clear mental image of a preferable future”.

Vision is the filter by which all other decisions are made and as such it must be owned, because it will take you beyond anything you have experienced before. Vision can be distinguished within your personal mission or your corporate purpose.

It’s specific and so can’t be all things to all people. If you try to make it so, you usually end up betraying your vision.

As a coach, my primary responsibility is to positively facilitate people through transition. From childhood to adolescence, adolescence to adulthood, from singleness to partnership, unemployment to employment, from sickness to wholeness, from crisis to resolve, failure to success, from poverty onto prosperity.

How can any of us face such daily challenges without a vision of the preferable outcome?

Identifying and prioritizing your vision has to be the best response to self-doubt. It empowers you with it’s purpose and direction – it becomes your compass and your map!

“A person’s visionary capacity will determine the outcome!”

Organisations led by people without a clear mental vision often experience symptoms of frustration within and a slowing down of momentum. They have no compass or map and as such, sometimes attract individuals that are happy to remain lost.

On the other hand, an organisation that has established its core values and vision will actually attract visionaries to it.

The buy in factor for visionaries – people who have force within, compelling forward momentum – goes way beyond natural circumstances and into the realm of values. The value you get out of vision is priceless. The amazing thing about defining and developing vision is that it is never impoverished. It will reward in the end, way beyond your expectations. What value would you put on the potential of vision within your organisation?

Vision is the awakening of our life’s purpose and is the force that compels us forward. It attracts people of similar spirit. It will empower you and overcome obstacles.

It stands for something, rather than falling for anything!

Coaching provides one of the greatest avenues to develop vision, accountability, encouragement and empowering questions, all serve to build strategies for vision.

As well as a wealth of free downloads online, many of the books I have written are on sale via the website – and a variety of Coaching options are all there, at your service, to build your vision.

Tony Mckeown is a personal life coach and director of coaching 4 life New Zealand. He has a passion for empowering people to find their life mission and purpose.
