If any naturalist had been asked at that day whether, presupposing that all the diverse species of each genus had been descended from an ancestral species, and that a total and thorough account were to be established of how each small divergence in form, color, or structure might have originated, and how the different distinctive features of habit and of geographic distribution might have been brought about &#8212; whether, if this were concluded, the &#8220;origin of species&#8221; would be determined, the fundamental secret wrought out &#8212; he would doubtlessly have replied positively. He would plausibly have imparted that he never expected any such phenomenal discovery to be made in his lifespan.  Darwin has done this, not simply in the persuasion of his disciples and supporters, but by the admissions of those who doubted the completeness of his theories.
